The Film's Odd Finale Revealed
If you're seeking a slasher-horror film that delivers mindless entertainment while eliciting cringes, chances are Bone Lake is on your curiosity. A recent scary film from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan debuted in movie houses on the third of October with an ridiculous concept and a evocative label to complement.
Warning: Spoilers below for the ending of Bone Lake.
A Mix of Levity and Darkness
Considering the moniker like Bone Lake and an opening sequence featuring individuals running stark naked through the wilderness—only to be hit with a crossbow in private parts—one can guess there's ample comic relief in the film. Moreover, the movie's conclusion, which portray the main couple looking worse for wear yet chuckling madly in unison, carry a tone of dark humor.
You would need to find something to chuckle over, too, if you endured what the character Diego and Sage experience in Bone Lake. A pair plagued by partnership troubles from the get-go—failure to talk, unfulfilling intimacy, an unequal share of money pressures, and more—their relationship is challenged when another duo, the character Will and the character Cin, interrupt their couple's getaway.
A Morbid Shift
At first seeming to be a contrast of differences between the duos—Diego and Sage are clumsy and blue-collar, whereas Cin and Will have a rich, lavish lifestyle and appear to be kissing on every surface possible—becomes sinister as the weekend unfolds. Will and Cin play on Diego and Sage's fears in their union. They tell untruths and talk about the protagonists, claiming to know about an affair and other internal drama.
These doubts explode in the most extreme way conceivable when Diego and Sage discover that Cin and Will aren't just here at Bone Lake accidentally: they are the owners and have been enticing couples to the grounds in order to get them to be unfaithful on their partners. The reason? Because Cin and Will are in fact siblings. Following their taboo romance was discovered by their mother and father and they were forcibly separated by force, they decided to punish everyone else (including their relatives). Since the world turned against them only for their choice of love, then they'll fight back at the world. Cin and Will's goal is to hold up a mirror to all the pairs they eventually end up eliminating, in an endeavor to demonstrate that their affection is no less real (or illegitimate) as the affection of these additional duos they try to split.
Unforeseen Strengths
However, what Cin and Will overlook is that Diego and Sage, regardless of their lack of communication with one another, truly love and love each other. It needed having a killer pair try to end their relationship and kill them to realize it. If that sounds grim, it is not presented that way. Bone Lake's tone is leaning toward comedy than actual fear.
The story finishes with Diego and Sage working together to escape Cin and Will's deadly plans. Interestingly is that while, at the outset of the feature, you feel a vast divide in the partnership between Diego and Sage in comparison to Cin and Will, by the end, Bone Lake turns it upside down. Cin and Will split up to hunt Sage and Diego, but Diego and Sage are interacting improved at this stage. They collaborate to kill the character Will with a cutting device. They after that attack Cin, who dies horribly at the depths of Bone Lake's pond—but just before the character Diego reclaims the marriage symbol intended for the character Sage that Will had taken and given to the character Cin.
Aftermath
After all the chaos of their double murder, drenched in gore and flesh, Diego and Sage are seated on the edge of a boat. Paradoxically, this is the nearest they've felt since the start of the movie, since all their romantic problems have been exposed for the two to observe, and all they have left are their beaten and wounded selves. To reinforce their renewed intimacy and intimate understanding of one another, Diego moves closer to place the wedding ring on the character Sage's digit and, when she rotates to view it in the sunlight, the two start chuckling.
One can easily to grasp the cause: When, the character Will offered engagement to the character Cin, it was a idyllic, romantic moment. Whereas the character Diego follows suit for the character Sage, they've only gotten away from a horrific ordeal. Nonetheless, Diego's proposal to Sage is not based on deceit, simply the understanding that they've come out of the most terrible experience of their time and, following all that, they yet wish to pass the remainder of their days together.
Filmmaker's Perspective
However, as filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan notes, the finale is not a guarantee of a perfect future for Diego and Sage.
"After enduring that situation with someone where you go through a violent killing spree, what do you recover from that? What actions do you take as a human being? And so I wanted to capture all of the moments there as one where it's this joy of 'thank goodness' and 'are we receiving what we've always wanted, but what in the world occurred? What the fuck do we do from here?' And just that set in of the situation of 'what does that mean for us {now|today|from
