A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people got wounded in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location displayed the structure left as a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
