EU Maritime Forces Free Crew After Somalia Piracy Incident on Oil Tanker
European Union maritime units have successfully rescued 24 sailors from a Malta-registered oil tanker that was attacked by pirates off the shoreline of Somali waters.
The Hellas Aphrodite, which was transporting fuel from India to South African destinations, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before boarding the vessel.
All sailors secured themselves inside a fortified citadel while the attackers took control of the marine transport.
Mission Accomplished
A naval vessel, operating under the EU's anti-piracy mission, reached the ship on Friday afternoon. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.
"All personnel is safe and no injuries have been reported. During the ordeal, they remained in the secure area in direct contact with command center," officials stated, noting that a "show of force" had prompted the attackers to leave the ship before the warship reached the location.
Ongoing Threat
Authorities emphasized that the threat risk in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the area.
The rescue operation involved a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and reconnaissance plane. Shortly before, a different vessel in the identical region was targeted by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.
Return of Maritime Crime
This incident marks the latest in a series of incidents that have created concern about a renewal of piracy in the region.
Such activity had decreased when global maritime security and security measures were implemented after reaching their highest point more than a decade ago.
Nevertheless, attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on vessels in the Red Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have led ships to be diverted through the African coastline - opening up new possibilities for Somali gangs.
Incident Data
- Multiple piracy cases of piracy took place off the coast of the Somali region last year
- Several vessel takeovers were documented among these events
- A single case of piracy was reported in 2023
Maritime security experts are closely watching the developments as shipping companies travel through these potentially hazardous shipping lanes.
